What's the 'Topic Web?'
Ruskin Junior School Curriculum
The Topic Web curriculum inspires the imagination of both children and adults in the school community and generates sparks of curiosity. In a nutshell, it is a theme that provides links across many areas of the curriculum. We believe that a curriculum, taught in this thematic way, promotes a love of learning and a willingness to explore.
We use the National Curriculum as a starting point for planning our Topic Webs. The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge and skills around which teachers develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils' knowledge, understanding and skills. Our children will have the opportunity to be creative, to be physically active and to be academically challenged.
At the end of the 2019 academic year we reviewed our curriculum to ensure we were providing our children with the best possible learning experiences. As a school we set out to ensure that across the whole school there was progression across subjects and topics. This work guides teachers when planning areas of learning across a year.
The national curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. Staff and pupils come together virtually for school assemblies. These are delivered in a variety of ways and provide the children with opportunities to celebrate, sing, reflect and thank. Topics covered include British values, school values, local and world news, how we would like to be treated and how we should treat those around us.
The curriculum is further strengthened by after school activities (clubs). A range of clubs are on offer to children after school, including dance, football, netball and choir.
